Deep Sea Frights: Underwater Gameplay for the Thalassophobic
It feels like Arboreta Games might be one to watch in 2022. After their 2021 release, The Black Iris – which our own Jesse G covered and enjoyed – Arboreta isn’t resting on their laurels. They’re coming back strong with It Sleeps Below the Haar, a horror exploration game set in a coastal village in North East Scotland. The trailer is light on details, but shows off some really interesting gameplay mechanics. At one point, a sort of magical staff is shown to reveal doorways hidden in a forest. There are also bits of underwater gameplay shown, just in case you thought It Sleeps Below the Haar wouldn’t fire up your thalassophobia. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
What even is a “haar”? I had to look it up. It’s sea fog. A thick, soupy sea fog that appears on the coasts of Scotland, Ireland, and Great Britain. It’s hard to ignore parallels to the work of someone like HP Lovecraft when you start thinking of things dwelling beneath the sea fog. While no enemies are shown in the It Sleeps Below the Haar trailer, and the game is billed as an exploration horror game, I can only assume there will be no automatic weapons or explosions. I’m sure there will be some sort of fish monster, though. If Arboreta skimps on the fish monsters, I might get upset.
Cosmic Dread from the Incomprehensible
This is one of the few examples I have ever seen of a videogame faithfully conveying what it truly means “cosmic horror”. Now despite what most people think, cosmic horror is not just Cthulhu, Dagon, or whatever cool-looking monster or alien. In the original concept of the father of cosmic horror, HP Lovecraft, fear derives from the sensation of being in front of something that the human mind is not prepared to withstand. The most primal of human fears, is the fear of the unknown, as Lovecraft himself stated. And here unknown actually means incomprehensible. We, as humans, are afraid of what we cannot comprehend. HITMAN 3
The cosm itself is the most incomprehensible amongst all things. Despite all the advancements of science, we will never be able to fully comprehend it, not even in a million years, and I’m saying this as a scientist myself. Why do religions have much more appeal than science? Because, unlike science, they promise to explain the unexplicable. They promise to vanquish all of human fears. They promise to vanquish the cosmic horror, nonetheless. Now this game aims to canvey the sensation of being in front of such horror, and I personally think it fully manages to fulfill this purpose.
A Spiritual Successor: It Sleeps Below the Haar Exceeds Expectations
After finishing The Black Iris, I was really hoping for something that fit the similar needs that it did. This game does that and gives so much more; it makes every usage of being in the form of a game that it can. It does an extremely good job of inserting the player into the shoes of the research student, from the manual of how the local people speak to the open areas of land that the player can explore. Talking to the local people also really elevate the feeling of the setting, their dialogue and the reasons they’re there are really interesting to read.
Through an excellent use of sound and visuals it manages to create an atmosphere of subtle dread that constantly fills you with the sensation of impending danger, despite the absence of any actual threat. This game is a walking sim, yes, but a perfectly executed one. The player always feels entertained and engaged, never bored. And most importantly, he/she feels a constant curiosity, a constant stimulation to learn more about the lore of this obscure island, to shed light on the mystery hidden within its depths. This is true cosmic horror, in its purest form. Horizon Forbidden West Complete Edition

HOW TO CHANGE THE LANGUAGE OF A ANY GAME
1. Check the in-game settings and see if you can change it there. If not, continue down below. You might have to try and use Google Translate to figure out the in-game menus.
– Steam Games –
2a. Look for an .ini file in the game folder or subfolders. Could be called something like steam_emu.ini, steamconfig.ini, etc., but check all the .ini files. There should be a line for language/nickname that you can edit in notepad. If not, look for a “language” or “account_name” text file that you can edit. (If not in the game folder, try C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\ SteamEmu Saves\settings). Save and open the game again.
– GOG Games –
2b. Same steps as Steam games except instead of .ini files, look for .info files
If these steps don’t work, then the files for the language you are looking for might not be included. We only check for English here.
