Two Towers haunt the landscapes of Tower Song, and players must unravel their mysteries to save Solace’s sister and the desert metropolis of Qadam. Along the way, players will traverse across forests, rivers, deserts and more. After a hard day’s work, they can also pause to get to know their party better at camp. With one central plot but four unique perspectives, players will always have something new to discover on subsequent playthroughs. Loadouts can be easily changed between encounter attempts, and players can re-craft their equipment at campfires to suit their playstyle. Of course, curious players will find even more unique and empowering equipment hidden amongst the nooks and crannies of the Towers. Tali is a mistress of dark magic, pulling Tarot cards from her Dark Deck to access spells and inflict devious curses on her enemies. Jiji, Tali’s cat familiar, is his own party member in combat, tearing into opponents with his claws and protecting the party with his nekomata’s barrier.

Unique Characters and Their Combat Styles

Porphry is a battle-hardened warrior wielding a very large, very dangerous axe. Her abilities send her into a Battle Trance, allowing her to access game-changing moves before pushing her over the edge into an uncontrollable berserker rage! Ezoan is a crafty engineer and spellcaster. He summons scorching fire and soothing auras to support his team before hopping into his exosuit to punish foes with overwhelming force. Neat is the ultimate tempo-fighter. Quick to strike and even quicker on his feet, Neat strings together combos to unlock an ever-changing skillset as combat progresses, before turning the tide with powerful finishing moves. The standout feature is the combat design, with each character having their own unique systems. One uses tarot cards, another has a sniper rifle with ammunition, another changes between elemental stances, and so on. Fights feel a lot more dynamic than the standard set by classic Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy. The plot and setting were both very cool, but a bit lean. What’s there is certainly worth the money, especially if you have interest in replaying with a different main character to see new dialogue and mix up the gameplay a bit.

Streamlined Gameplay Mechanics in Tower Song

The key, for me, however is how much this game respects your time. Imagine playing an old school JRPG without random encounters—this is what you get in Tower Song. Want to get into a fight? Walk into an enemy you can see and fight or avoid it if it’s an optional area/chest. Knowing when I can get into a fight allows me to enjoy the art and environment and manage resources better. But that’s not all—the game also fully heals your health and secondary resource (mana) after each fight so you don’t have to spend time topping off with consumables and spells after each fight.

This might seem like it makes the game too easy, but it doesn’t. I found that each encounter was challenging and unique, based on the enemy strategies and my party composition. So Tower Song eliminates the grind but keeps the challenge. You level up as a group at certain story moments, so you are never behind or need to worry about leveling and grinding to progress. If that wasn’t enough, the crafting system allows you to deconstruct any weapon/item you have made for a full return on resources, allowing you to experiment without fear of losing items and, once again, having to grind to get materials.
