Airborne Empire is the follow-up to Airborne Kingdom. It expands on the idea of managing a flying city and adds new features to make the game better. The gane mixes resource management, city building, and combat, creating a good balance between what feels familiar and what feels new. While it might not seem like a completely new game, Airborne Empire improves on the first game and offers a fun city-building experience. Set years after Airborne Kingdom, the game challenges you to rebuild a flying civilization. You still need to manage essentials like food, water, housing, and coal, but now you also have to think about lift, propulsion, health, and tilt when designing your city. Every building placement affects the city’s balance, so you have to plan carefully and aim for efficiency. I found it really fun to manage all these elements, and I was surprised at how large our flying city could grow. It’s also great that you can easily edit it whenever you want.

Recruiting Citizens and Completing Side Quests for Kingdom Growth

The gameplay loop is straightforward yet fun: you follow quests, gather resources, complete tasks, and grow your kingdom. Scouting the ground for materials and ruins adds some variety to exploration. You can also recruit citizens, complete side quests, and collect artifacts. There’s even trading to earn money and unlock new building schemes. However, this is where the gameplay can feel a bit stale. The map is often large but mostly empty, with resources as the primary incentive to explore. While there are unique points of interest like cotton farms, ranger towers, and rebuildable temples, they lack meaningful interaction, which detracts from their significance. Adding more liveliness to the world would enhance the experience. That said, everything mentioned above does offer that rewarding feeling.

Managing Buildings for a Dynamic Gameplay Experience

Overall, the progression in this early access title is impressive. The core concept revolves around advancing technology, which allows you to enhance your city and attract more inhabitants. Quests vary widely, from aiding struggling towns to defeating pirate kings. However, the story lacks inspiration, largely consisting of text that often fails to engage you properly. The graphics in Airborne Kingdom are truly stunning, with details in the floating city and vibrant biomes below. Each city and skyship boasts a clean, elegant design that captures the whimsy of a world in the clouds. While the cities are beautifully rendered, some ground environments and skyboxes can feel repetitive, though this doesn’t significantly detract from the overall experience. Additionally, the game offers a variety of buildings to manage, from warehouses to clinics and farms, providing numerous engaging gameplay options that keep you entertained.

Does the Airborne Empire Offer Enough Content for Its Current State?

To conclude, this game isn’t perfect. One of the main issues is the pacing. Certain tasks take longer than they should, which can feel frustrating. For example, producing enough iron and cloth takes a significant amount of time, even with upgrades it never feels quite sufficient. The same goes for technology research. Do we really need to wait 48 in-game hours to complete a single technology? That feels excessive. However, in most cases, you can keep yourself busy by exploring or flying around while the research progresses, so the time doesn’t feel entirely wasted. Another pacing issue is the day-night cycle. Days and nights can last quite a while, and unfortunately, you can’t adjust this.

On the flip side, repairing and constructing buildings happens almost instantly, which makes me question how advanced this society is supposed to be. The balance between these elements could definitely use some tweaking. Another point worth mentioning is the price. For an Early Access title, it’s a bit on the pricey side. That said, the game already offers 10 or more hours of gameplay, and it’s quite polished for its current state. As the developers noted on Steam: “We plan to add new building types, new biomes, new events/missions, and expand the game’s background story.” Even now, there’s plenty of content to dive into, so you’re unlikely to feel short-changed if you decide to purchase it.
