Studio System is for you. If you enjoy the weird experimental stuff and the gleefully surreal, Studio System is for you. If you want to continue the early 2000’s wave of psychological media like Serial Experiments Lain, Yume Nikki, or the works of Satoshi Kon, then yes, Studio System is for you. Mechanically, the core of this game will be very familiar to those who’ve played PSX Resident Evil games; fixed camera tank controls! Learning to tame the controls by kiting and outmaneuvering enemies is part of the fun. And also like RE, routing the game for subsequent playthroughs is incredibly rewarding.

Studio System’s strongest aspects are its sense of direction and artistry. Visually, it’s surreal and offputting

with its nightmarish atmosphere fueled by heavy use of uncomfortable camera angles, bizarre textures, impossible design, and almost painfully vibrant colours; plus, the character models are cute! Narratively, it’s an intriguing tale with dialogue that has a mood almost impossible to pin down, and with a cast that are immediately captivating. Audibly, not only do the otherworldly and inhuman sounds of the enemies leave an impression, but the soundtrack to this game is a surprising hit that I’m genuinely surprised isn’t currently available. All of these aspects and more form together into one cohesive, psychological whole. and lends itself to tons of replay value, thanks to its strong grasp on what made the level design and puzzles of those games so engaging. What differentiates Studio System from its fixed-camera roots is a “not-entirely-fixed-camera”, as the camera angle can be manipulated, allowing you to reveal what’s off-screen, and more crucially, use it as a tool for traversing the world, or use the camera itself as a weapon. It’s a simple yet clever twist on a familiar system. This permeates every aspect of the game; the story is overall quite messy.

beyond telling you what buttons to press, the game lets you figure it all out yourself, and has a nice helping of gameplay-related surprises to keep you on your toes. NG+ has some well-hidden secrets for 100%, and getting all of the extras and endings was very fun. never got bored across 5 playthroughs because it’s such a nicely-packed game. striking visuals, off-kilter music and some very odd and unsettling sound design choices get you IMMEDIATELY immersed, and the story is delivered during what feels like moments of clarity sandwiched between schizophrenic episodes. the twists and turns in the plot are much more about what they imply rather than the events themselves, most notably in how each of the game’s endings serve to recontextualize the others, and several other events in the story. without spoiling anything, there’s a great attention to detail put into seemingly trivial lines along with plenty of visual storytelling and theming. solid game, well worth the time. despite what uwil said about never making another videogame i sincerely hope inspiration strikes for something like a sequel, spinoff or successor, because while the camera mechanic was great,

due to the sheer amount of passion on display. And for the people this game does mesh with, it will really mesh with them. Beyond the shortcomings, there is something truly special to love here. If you have even the slightest interest in this game, I cannot recommend it enough.
