It is an excellent indie turn-based RPG by Milton Pool, the developer of Oversoul and former lead artist of Adventure Quest Worlds (where he is better known as Nulgath). The most important thing to understand about the game is that it is, first and foremost, a passion project developed over the better part of a decade by an extraordinarily talented artist and animator. Because of this, It has some of the best visuals and animations that I have ever seen in an indie game, a charming sense of humor, and an engaging combat system with plenty of complex and challenging encounters reminiscent of games like Darkest Dungeon.

The Surprising Strength of the System

Having been familiar with Milton Pool’s prior work, I came to the game expecting the art and animation to be excellent and a little risqué. I was not disappointed — the animations are smooth and visually stimulating, the character designs are unique, detailed, and a bit horny (as is the developer’s style), and the background design for the zones and nodes really bring the game’s world to life. But the biggest surprise for me was definitely the strength of the combat system. When you’re first introduced to the game, the combat appears deceptively simple: the player controls teams of up to four characters of various classes who each have three inherent skills (a basic attack, a special attack, and an ultimate), up to three slots for equip able skills, and up to five slots for stat-boosting runes. The tutorial and first few battles are also intentionally easy to let players familiarize themselves with the combat mechanics, with plenty of in-game explanations. However, by the end of Zone 1 the game throws a series of challenging fights with unique mechanics which will force the players to constantly adjust their strategies. Every zone thereafter continues to add more mechanics and strategies to keep the players on their toes. There are at least a couple of fights in each zone which I would consider truly challenging, even after spending considerable time playing this game.

A Bounty of Characters: Over 100 Playable Personalities Await

I also liked the plot, characters, and writing. The main character, Akumi, is a lazy delinquent bounty hunter bumming her way through the Hex Realms, an alternate dimension which combines fantasy and sci-fi tropes. Akumi starts the game completely broke, having spent the last 3 years on vacation after collecting a huge bounty. When her ship and gear are stolen by pirates, Akumi has to recover her gear, round up some friends (and enemies) to adventure with, and begin accepting work from Primal Instinct, the in-universe bounty hunter organization, once again. To meet these challenges, players get tons of unique characters (there are over 100 playable characters in game), skills, and runes, with plenty of fun combos to discover. Learning how to beat these challenges and experimenting with combos was one of the biggest draws of the game for me. From there, the plot mostly follows Akumi as she accepts bounty hunter missions across the game’s diverse areas while slowly unraveling a worldwide conspiracy which forms the game’s main questline. The writing is fun, raunchy, and at times heartwarming. The various characters Akumi meets and interacts with throughout the Hex Realms are enjoyable and memorable, with unique designs and personalities.

Has Milts iconic art style and doesn’t shy away from it, having seen his art from AQW since 2008 you can tell he still loves to draw and create with his iconic art style as seen from his streams/posts. There are a few bugs such as clicking too fast during an ability/cast animation which can potentially freeze the game, unable to leave a fight because it’s “stuck” in said ability cast animation. I’ve noticed this happens when using a character’s ult because you can see the background change, but the game gets stuck.

Rarely it happens and sometimes it doesn’t. Among other bugs, upon counterattacking and curiously clicking on abilities, your character is stuck on the very front in the enemy’s face and upon entering their next turn the game freezes. Still, I’m glad to have backed this up on Kickstarter and see how it evolved since last year. Can’t wait to see some QoL changes. Overall, I quite enjoyed the game (as evidenced by my 160+ hours and counting in playtime). I highly recommend this game to anyone who enjoys turn-based RPG team strategy games with excellent anime-style art and animation. Lies of P
