It’s here we find our protagonist, Shiratori Ritsu, the sole male allowed on campus and the school priest. Never once has he set foot outside the academy grounds, which protect him from demons lusting after him. Aoi Tori has a huge theme on “The Will to Live” and uses a lot of clear Christian Bible stories as parallels to represent the main theme and lots of interesting character.
The common route starts off with a very surprising emotional prologue, arguably the best emotional arc in the whole visual novel. The rest of the common route is more of a typical moege style character introductions, but with interesting foreshadowing thrown in. The visual novel clearly has a big parallel of presenting the story as a western play, down to having the characters eventually choosing to act out a play for the school. this is where Aoi Tori starts to get wild in its storytelling, with a combination of exploring the depth of the main heroines as well as unraveling the true nature and potential of the protag’s “pleasure priest” powers. The true route, accessed on the title screen, after clearing the first 3 routes, actually directly takes advantage of the stuff learned in the non-true routes better than many true routes from other visual novels. Aoi Tori showcases the best and worst of modern Purplesoft. It has a very unique setting, excellent pacing, memorably quirky characters, and unafraid to break the mold.
It also has an abnormally high amount of focus on plot important sex scenes, has some outright strange storytelling decisions, and while the writing can be clever there are unfortunate details that are under-explained or purposefully skimmed to move the plot along. On a personal level I had a blast from start to finish, and love Purplesoft embracing the weirdness + degeneracy of the eroge genre while still telling an engaging story with a lot of heart.
