Secret Little Haven tells the story of Alex, a young transgender student struggling to balance her online passions with real world pressure. While she spends most of her time goofily chatting with friends and nerding out over the latest magical girl anime, she also struggles to come out to her friend both in the real world and online. She is split between two worlds: the seemingly limitless.
The game looks like Alex’s computer desktop; players rummage through files and have conversations with Alex’s friends through instant messenger.
Players select from pre-written dialog responses to guide the conversation and can also open an in-game web browser or play game found on Alex’s desktop. It’s possible to move between multiple conversations at once while also scrolling through forum posts or playing with a Tamagotchi. There are a lot of moments packed in here that are distinctly relatable, from the overwhelming joy of being gendered correctly for for the first time, to the distinct archetypes of different forum members, to the genuine fear and panic involved with realizing that maybe you don’t have that whole “gender” thing figured out after all. Almost all of us have been one or both of those people before, and seeing that moment depicted in such a positive way makes me so happy. If you have fond memories of forum culture or a niche discord server, there’s a good chance that you’ll really, really enjoy this game. If a friend or loved one of yours is trans, this game is an excellent window into what coming out to oneself can look and feel like. If you’re trans, and are in a headspace to handle a game about coming out to yourself and fraught relationships with parents.

The way that the story is presented to you in this game is very relatable to those that grew up using the internet as their escape from reality, a library of finite knowledge, and learning how to make friends and communicate more effectively (especially if you had something to hide). There were points of the game that gave me goosebumps. Some of them had me on the edge of my seat, while others made me want to burrow back into it. but this type of gameplay was a perfect fit given the content of the narrative, and it helps to create a more personal connection with the protagonist and her struggles mentally grasping all of the changes in her life as they happen. kid just entering high school with this cool thing known as the internet… and finding most of my friends there, rather than irl. especially right down to the super cringey way we all used to type! xD don’t even get me started on the virtual hugging and roleplaying.

HOW TO CHANGE THE LANGUAGE OF A ANY GAME
1. Check the in-game settings and see if you can change it there. If not, continue down below. You might have to try and use Google Translate to figure out the in-game menus.

2a. Look for an .ini file in the game folder or subfolders. Could be called something like steam_emu.ini, steamconfig.ini, etc., but check all the .ini files. There should be a line for language/nickname that you can edit in notepad. If not, look for a “language” or “account_name” text file that you can edit.
