and work part-time jobs while investigating those who know truth behind the Phoenix Mirror. Shenmue 3 is most enjoyable in a specific way, and that is by playing it right after Shenmue 1 & 2. If you want a simple summery of my thoughts, Shenmue 3 is a SEGA Dreamcast game developed in the modern day. The game design, progression and more is very late 90’s and early 2000’s era coded, but the visuals and presentation is what you’d expect from a AA release from 2019. As for the story, it’s a continuation but was never meant to be a final entry.

Shenmue is a specific type of open world game design, with hand-crafted environments that respectfully capture the locations and style of the setting.

and in 3’s case, is late 80’s rural China, and I believe the game really succeeds on this front. I was genuinely so impressed by the environments, and it feels like despite the lacking budget compared to it’s older brothers, Shenmue 3 manages to impress you visually. Gameplay wise, it’s still fun. While it’s hard to suggest to someone who is into Fallout, Witcher, or Cyberpunk, as long you go in with a open mind, I feel you’ll have a good time. However, I’d strongly recommend playing Shenmue 1 & 2 first, as a chance to get used to this type of style of game, and then after finishing 2, you jump right into 3. Shenmue I & II

This game, however, is made more for fans of the series, and when you read about the development, it’s made very clear.

There’s one feature of the game that really hit me, and that was the ability to call friends and family from the original titles and talk to them. There’s the Save Shenmue building which features pictures of backers from the kickstarter back in 2015, and there’s a book in Ryo’s hotel room with notes and names from fans. It’s a very intimate game, and I feel would be perfect stress reliever. Take your time, explore your surroundings, waste time with mini-games and side quests and take the main story slowly. Breaking ground in open world and storytelling on a level we had not seen before. Because of that broken ground, they were rough. So it is disappointing to see a follow up finally emerge that does nothing to enhance the original design. Now, that’s either great for the nostalgia crowd or gut wrenching for those new to the series. Everything is as clunky as the originals, right from the graphics, gameplay, exploration, through to the awkward voice acting and writing. To like this game, you really need to decide what crowd you belong to. DLC2 Big Merry Cruise A new cruise ship has arrived in the Niaowu harbor.

Shenmue III a game that follows the formula of its predecessors so closely that it feels like something out of a time capsule from the early 2000s.

Too many open world games have gone in the direction of creating big empty violent playgrounds with just enough filler content to pad out their playtimes and give customers their $60 worth. Shenmue 3 contrasts this with an open world that’s small, detailed, grounded in realism, steeped in mundanity, and all with a homely feel. It succeeds in creating that world, but fails to use it to its full potential. There’s no hiding that Shenmue 3 is a bad game, and I’d have a hard time recommending it while looking a person in the eye. It’s even a pretty bad Shenmue game. Influent

The hybrid health/stamina system is not a welcome addition, the combat is a step backwards, and the story fails to clear the low bar the previous games set out for it. The dialogue still sounds like it was both poorly translated and poorly written, new story elements join old ones that still don’t make sense, and side content still lacks depth and quantity. This game can be easily criticized, but there’s undeniable passion and effort here, giving its flaws a campy feel that you can still find enjoyment in if you’re open to it. I do, however, believe Shenmue 3 does enough right that I’m not only enjoying it just because I can laugh at it.
