All the bullets makes this feel slightly more like a shmup (retro shoot ’em up) than many other roguelike games. The moment to moment gameplay is damn fun; a bullet hell twin stick shooter may sound tired, but this is made by Fraxy veterans. they know what they’re doing. The long term strategy is fun also, balancing the ideas of making players feel more powerful and keeping it balanced so any run is still salvageable (notice that your damage never really goes that far up in most runs). The bosses and enemies are excellently crafted, dishing out bullets in such fun ways it never gets boring to weave and bomb through em.

Tight controls are a must in a bullet-hell game, and Monolith delivers.

Your character is pretty zippy and everything’s very responsive, making it much easier to weave in and out of projectiles coming at you. You still need some skill to move around without taking damage. The enemies are really well balanced. Obviously with this being a bullet-hell, there are some enemies (particularly bosses) that will completely fill your screen with projectiles, and you’ll have to weave between them or drop a bomb and get rid of them. However, there are also plenty of enemies that are manageable and not too difficult to avoid. Favela Zombie Shooter Switch NSP

Even enemies that do throw an enormous amount of projectiles have clear ways to be dealt with, which really helps make this game more manageable to those new to bullet-hells/SHMUPs. Having said that, the boss fights are certainly quite challenging here. Having good weapons certainly helps, but there’s still a lot of dodging that you have to do if you want to beat the bosses with a decent amount of health left (something I haven’t quite perfected yet). There’s also a good amount of boss variety here and so far, I haven’t come across any that feel particularly stronger or weaker than others.

Speaking of weapons, we have more good variety!

There are a few different weapon types, and all of these are found with two, three or four (depending on how you get them) modifiers that drastically change how they behave as well as how good they are. There are definitely certain weapon types that I prefer to others, but they’re all pretty good. They did a good job adding enough stuff to make all the runs feel different. Unless you face the same boss twice in a row, each run is going to feel like a completely new experience. There are a lot of room layouts and each level of the game has quite a few different enemy types to keep things feeling fresh. Just skill shooter 2

In each level you’ll come across a shop where you can spend hard earned money for certain items, but there’s also a permanent item shop in the little hub level before each run starts. Here, you can unlock new weapons, new items etc. It adds a nice sense of progression to the game, though the items are quite expensive. Anything the gameplay does, the artistic side does one better. The graphics are masterfully made, balancing readability and quality. The visual design on enemies is superbly creative, throwing ghosts, mages, and robots at you and still having it all work.
