The hex-based combat system introduces unique strategic considerations. Units can be attacked from up to six directions rather than the usual four, making flanking and formation-based tactics even more crucial. The game encourages smart positioning, and I quickly realized the importance of keeping my units together to avoid being surrounded. Chapter one introduces four melee classes, though I’ll admit their names didn’t stick with me. However, their roles in battle are distinct. There’s a tank capable of taunting enemies, a fast attacker who can strike twice, a spear-wielder who can stun foes with a shield bash, and Marcus, a hammer-wielding powerhouse who delivers devastating blows. Each character feels unique, and understanding how they complement each other is key to surviving battles.

The Impact of Static Battlefield Design on Ranged Units

The terrain also plays an important role in combat. Units positioned in bushes gain a 20% dodge bonus, while those standing on loose rocks suffer a similar penalty. The game seemed to hint that I should take advantage of the terrain by keeping three of my characters in the bushes for added defense, but the AI quickly adapted, refusing to let me bunker down so easily. One noticeable aspect of the game so far is the lack of elevation changes in the battle maps. However, the game is still in early development, and mechanics like these could easily be refined in later updates.

How Will Those Who Rule Evolve as Development Progresses?

If the current level of challenge persists throughout the full game, I expect Those Who Rule will be a difficult experience for many players. The last strategy game that genuinely tested my patience was Banner of the Maid, which only became manageable after I started over-leveling my units. If Those Who Rule continues down this path, it might become a favorite among hardcore strategy fans but could also deter more casual players.

Overall, my first impressions of Those Who Rule are overwhelmingly positive. The hex grid adds a refreshing twist to tactical combat, the character interactions are engaging, and the AI offers a genuine challenge. There’s still room for improvement, especially in terms of ranged combat options and varied terrain, but the foundation is solid. I’m excited to see how the game evolves as development progresses.
