Campaigns: quite good in their simplicity and the way they are structured as being helpful tales/legends for main character to listen to, definite improvement over HoMM 6 story, but don’t remember what Trial by Fire campaign is about, can’t vouch for it. Hero models: minotaur, gnoll, genie etc. heroes finally have corresponding models running around, been waiting for this small detail for decades. Flanking mechanic: you do more damage while attacking from the side and even more when you attack from behind, I think it’s a great addition.
A Blend of Classic and Modern Features
Town building process: basically good old building progression, but with a town level, similar to HoMM 5. Creatures basically use a bit “relaxed” 7-tier system, since there are 3 core creatures, 3 elite and 1 champion, like in HoMM 6. But it feels like 7-tier system, at least to me, and I really like it. Not only that, it also contains building choices, like HoMM 4, although it doesn’t concern creature dwellings (except growth choices), because only tier 7 “champion” can be chosen (some good old rivalries from HoMM 4 are back, like black dragon / hydra choice ). The Lord of the Rings: Conquest
Town areas of control are still there, but you can do neat things, like plunder mines and there are tons of hero abilities associated with those areas – overall, vast improvement over previous game. Thankfully, no more destroying towns and re-building them as your faction, horribly realized idea from HoMM 6. Hero skill wheel: there now not 2, but 6 classes in each faction! Which, of course, can be either bad or good, depending on how it’s balanced. But, if we are talking purely from a perspective of choice and complexity – it’s great.
Exploring Class Specializations and Faction Skills
So many different heroes, with different classes and stat priorities, specializations are back, there are also faction-specific skills (like necromancy), an ability to set governor for a town from HoMM 4 is also back + the new skill wheel is very nice, because it’s fully customizable. Also, there is an option to enable some random skill progression, for those who miss it, I don’t really know how it works though. Creature synergy: so many different things to try, but again, it may be a good thing or a bad, depending on how it’s balanced. Nevertheless, my point is that in HoMM 6, despite creatures having more abilities, I never really felt like any of them matter or there is some sort of tactical “creature co-op” going on, expect maybe when playing Sanctuary. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
Another improvement over previous game, in my opinion. Those synergies make themselves known and I feel like I’m actually building some tactical plan, especially in Sylvan, where I can never ignore who is standing next to Sun Deers lol. Purely subjective, probably, but I can assure that a lot of synergies of different kinds are there, you will feel that presence and plan according to it. Some AI behavior: been said a lot everywhere, not really much to add. It just does really weird things, like using weak units from garrison when it has hundreds of its own, choosing weird pathing and actions to avoid Fortress hero’s rune like it’s the worst thing ever, bizarre choice of spells in general etc.
A Critical Look at Design and Inspiration
Town screens: wouldn’t call them bad, just quite uninspiring. I even dislike nonsensical town screens from my favourite HoMM 4, such a random structure placing. I think HoMM 7 is a bit better than HoMM 6, but it needs a lot of improvement if it’s to stay 2D and match HoMM 1-3 in quality or return to wonderful 3D screens from HoMM 5. All in all, I don’t really pay much attention to those anymore, but when I do pay – my opinion is as above. Recycling a lot of music from Clash of Heroes, Dark Messiah of Might and Magic, and now from HoMM 6: while I enjoy a lot of those themes, I would really like to see more new compositions.
If it’s an homage to a previous game, make it like water theme, that sound similar to HoMM 4, don’t just copy-paste or remix music from previous games set in Ashan again and again (or even HoMM 2 and Might & Magic 6). HoMM 7 basically follows HoMM 3 and HoMM 5 most faithfully, while also managing to pay homage to HoMM 4 and improve upon things existing in HoMM 6. It’s a great game with a lot of potential, but, unfortunately, it was never meant to be realized by the developers, since Ubisoft never gave them a chance to make a 100% properly functioning worthy successor or even a new best game on the series. HOW TO CHANGE THE LANGUAGE OF A ANY GAME
1. Check the in-game settings and see if you can change it there. If not, continue down below. You might have to try and use Google Translate to figure out the in-game menus.
– Steam Games –
2a. Look for an .ini file in the game folder or subfolders. Could be called something like steam_emu.ini, steamconfig.ini, etc., but check all the .ini files. There should be a line for language/nickname that you can edit in notepad. If not, look for a “language” or “account_name” text file that you can edit. (If not in the game folder, try C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\ SteamEmu Saves\settings). Save and open the game again.
– GOG Games –
2b. Same steps as Steam games except instead of .ini files, look for .info files
If these steps don’t work, then the files for the language you are looking for might not be included. We only check for English here.
