This direct sequel to Jrago The Demon Hunter features updated graphics, 5 playable characters, new abilities, new spells, new music, and multiplayer! Local CO-OP or Steam Remote Play Together! This is not a metroidvania! (It’s linear). It is a co-op (or solo if you prefer) stage-based Castlevania style game. The experience reminds me of co-op beat-em ups, but replace beat’em up combat with something more Castlevania in style, with swarms of enemies.

Beyond the Janky Original: Improved Gameplay for a Wider Audience

The sequel to Jrago is more like a reboot, and probably a better entry point if you want to try the series. I think the first game is better, bigger, grander, but it suffers from a lot of jank that will turn most people away in their first hour or two of playing. With Jrago 2, most of the issues I had with the first game have been polished up. The game starts out where you will need to be quite pragmatic, carefully dispatching your enemies, trying not to take damage, however once you acquire a few movement upgrades the game really ramps up and you’ll be zipping around mowing down hordes of enemies which is quite satisfying. There might be the occasional death where you feel like you had little chance without knowing what was coming, or that you needed better stats to survive. Despite this, I was pretty happy to just try again. Afterall, every enemy you kill gives you XP which persists after death, so if you die a few times on a stage, by the 4th time you’re going through the level you’ll be far harder to kill than the first time you attempted it. You can revisit past stages for map completion, to find missing items, to grind XP or beat it on a higher difficulty for the Steam achievements if that is your jam.

Jrago 2 uses a lot of the same assets and locations as the first game but redesigned levels with plenty of changes and new music tracks. I was a little disappointed by the lack of new locations and do prefer the almost-metroidvania adventure style of the first game but this was a fun time as well, especially in Co-op. Jrago, along with fellow guardians, embarks on a quest to slay evil demons and restore light.
