Interesting spin on boomer shooters, very fluid movement mechanics and interesting vertical level design, love the gun design and smooth animations, the comics are a nice addition. The art style is another thing that makes this game stand out for me. In a world of retro-stylized pixelated boomer shooters, this is more of a modern, high graphical fidelity yet at the same time borderlands-esque cartoonish outline type of visuals. Complements the geometric level design very nicely. Fast paced fun all around. Makes me remember all those days fragging friends in Q3 and similar games.

From its Doom inspiration for game style, to the very heavy reminder of Quake III arena in terms of gameplay and movement feel, GRAVELORD is a promising FPS Boomer Shooter.

One of the standout features the game has is a card pickup. As the level progressed there are 3 sets of 3 different cards you can pick. They are, for now at least, the same cards, but each tarot card will give you a unique buff. If you pick a different card for each tier, you will forfeit the other card. Choose carefully. Although it is evidently inspired by Doom and Quake, it also brings me notes of Duke Nukem, specifically a- quite obscure game- by the name of Duke Nukem Manhattan Project. The dialogue and witty punch liners, the guitar riff are all reminders of that great game. Quake Enhanced

Besides the lacklustre amount of tarot cards to choose from, I do not have any complaints about the game. The gameplay is fun, the weapon variety is expected but fun, the difficulty is approachable on Easy and a lot more challenging on higher difficulties. It includes exploration but doesnt make it too obvious. There is a bit of platforming but the controls feel responsive enough to not get frustrated at it. The only other minor complaint I would have is that there seems to be a lack of big bosses that you can fight. I presume that this could be content that is coming in the future

Power-ups in the form of cards is also intriguing idea. I wasn’t sure how it’s going to fit into the gameplay, but they make it work quite well. They can make you stronger or significantly alter gameplay. Game might seem hard at some places and it does not hold your hand, some secrets are really hard to find. But that’s how we rolled in ye olde times. Going 10kms to school in 1m of snow, uphill both ways. Solid fastpaced shooter with a heavy metal attitude and over the top guns! Tight run n’ gun gameplay and a nice variety in pacing throughout the levels! It’s great already and I’m looking forward to seeing how it evolves towards the full release!
